Mercury in High Fructose Corn Syrup, Chemical Overload

Wow, wow, wow!

That is all I can say about THE CHEMICAL EDGE: Pollution and Our Fragile Health, a new website I discovered today.  It is a must read!

I am still devouring the wealth of information that is there waiting for you to discover it, too.  I was looking for articles about chemicals and their effect on health and environment when I happened upon this gem!

My top picks among the articles there for the day:

Corn Syrup and Mercury Contamination:  Just when you think you are safe by avoiding vaccines and tuna, here is another frighteningly widespread mercury contamination from daily processed food consumption.  From the article:  “Mercury is toxic in all its forms,” said IATP’s David Wallinga, M.D., and a co-author in both studies. “Given how much high fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered."  Just one more reason to eat whole, fresh foods!

Chemical Overload:  This is based on a Canadian newpaper article written last year, but is a wealth of information on chemical overload in our environment and the current measures (or lack of!) attempting to control it.  From the article: "Only now are governments beginning to examine the dangers posed to human health and ecosystems. Many western governments are initiating new chemical controls as part of an international Strategic Approach to International Chemical Management agreement signed in Dubai in 2006. The agreement was sparked by the realization that nearly every square inch of the planet is now contaminated to one degree or another with a chemical pollutant. What’s more, over the next 15 years, chemical production is expected to climb 80 per cent."

Studies and reports like these continue to back up the importance of a raw, vegan, whole foods, organic diet and the use of non-toxic household and body care products (like Miessence).

It is easy to become overwhelmed at the thought of chemical dangers lurking around us, especially if you are trying to recover from the health effects of chemical overload.  We must take it one step at a time.  Every choice we make is important, and any time you can choose a non-toxic product or food, it takes you one step closer to living a healthier, cleaner life from the inside out.

The more you make these choices, the better you will feel.  The better you feel, the more it will motivate you to continue to make more informed, healthier choices.  Once you realize how far you have come, you will rejoice in the changes and wonder (like me) why you didn't do it sooner!  So, don't despair, get started today, with your first step.

Which choice can you start with?

This is one of the reasons I feed my child only non processed who foods. No food dyes, nopreservatives, no HFCS, no hormones. Basically all free range / organic animla products and organic fruits/veggies. I have also seen great improvements in my sons ADHD with this change in diet. I would imagine being vegan/raw diet that you do not feed your child HFCS either. As a former vegetarian, I applaud you for being able to maintain this type of diet. I tried but ended up so anemic evern with supplimenting with iron!

Hi Jacquelyn,

We started helping my son years ago by eliminating all chemicals first and saw a big improvement, but then we hit a plateau. It wasn't until we went (high) raw vegan (and gluten-free) that we saw such amazing changes that we knew we found what we were looking for. I think you have done well by eliminating so much already!

As for the anemia problem, sometimes supplements can worsen the problem since they actually compete with the dietary iron for absorption and the supplement isn't as absorbable in the first place.

I have been anemic since I was a teenager and it wasn't until I went raw vegan that it went away! I believe the difference is the amount of greens we eat compared to a cooked vegetarian diet. Have you tried any green smoothies? (I have several recipes here on the blog.) These are a wonderful way to incorporate lots more green veggies and the best way to prevent anemia!

Thanks for stopping by!

A big way to avoid some of these chemicals and poisons is go natural with unprocessed foods. Keep it simple.
